Abstract

This research aims to explore research opportunities and determine research direction for

center of excellence in Southern Economic Corridor (SEC). The initial findings reveal three
priority research areas in agriculture: oil palm, rubber, aquaculture. The study focuses on the

specific area of research on oil palm, which considered as priority agriculture products,

impacting the economic activities in the SEC. The research relied on qualitative analysis of

budget grant for oil palm research during 0 0 8 to 20 2 0 by three granting agencies. Results

indicate that research budget on oil palm reached 6 2 million baht based on 0 0 research

topics. 85 percent was allocated on oil palm farming, especially on breeding 38 percent, and

cultivation 3 percent. Another large portion is on waste materials accounts for 9 percent.
Results suggested that the research budget allocation need to allocate tactically to address

the key priority in the entire oil palm supply chain. Therefore, a comprehensive research
direction must be determined to milestone key a research agenda in SEC.

The finds conclude that the research strategy for the Development of the Southern

Economic Corridor (SECr) Research consists of four strategic directions: . Formulate research
direction based on demand while balancing economics and social benefits, 2. Establish market

channels to commercialize research, 3 . Layout research career path toward research

excellence, and . Develop cooperation network and mechanisms with stakeholders. The
results of the study also layout a research framework of oil palm in 7 pillars: 1. Basic research
on oil palm, 2. Productivity enhancement in palm cultivation and plantation, 3. Technology

and tools to support palm cultivation, 4. Engineering, innovation for palm oil processing and

waste management, 5. Oleochemical Technology, 6. Agroeconomic, social, marketing and
logistics and 7. Policy standard, law, and regulation on oil palms research. This study also

provides suggestion on research areas for oil palm in SEC. Implications for future search are

discussed.
