Abstract
This article aims to study teachings assertion by using frame story
technique in nine Thai Jātaka literatures: Sapphasit Chadok, Thukammanik

Chadok, Surappha Chadok, Srivichai Chadok, Thananchai Bandit Chadok,
Nok Krajab Klonsuad, Lilit Srivichai Chadok, Sapphasit Kamchan and
Pathum Chadok Waduay Kol Haeng Satri. The result shows that these
Jātaka literatures use frame story to assert four Buddhist teachings which
are teaching of wisdom, teaching of relationship, teaching of karma’s result
and teaching of spiritual meditation. These texts also use frame story to

demonstrate Bodhisattva’s Paññāpārmi. The frame story in these texts can
be categorized by purpose into four types: frame story for questioning,
frame story for exemplification, frame story for expression of one’s past life,
and frame story for metaphorical-explanation. The various uses of the
frame story make the storytelling more complex and, consequently,

fascinating. The technique encourages the reader to interpret the
teachings, and illustrates varieties of them in the stories. In conclusion, this
study reveals that the frame story is used in Thai Jātaka literatures to
enable the reader’s mind to understand the texts more thoroughly and

efficaciously.
