ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at investigating problems of English speaking in oral
presentation and expressing opinions in public in order to f nd out ways to solve problems

of English teaching at Kasetsart University. It was carried out by using the qualitative and
quantitative research methods. The population of this study were 179 Kasetsart University

undergraduate students of The Faculty of Management Sciences, who were studying Speech
Communication in the second semester of the academic year 2007 and in the f rst semester

of the academic year 2008 i.e. 89 students and 90 students respectively. The instruments
employed in this study were rating-scale questionnaire, participatory observation, and

structural in-depth interview. The study results revealed that the students’ major problems
were 1) a lack of conf dence which was resulted from their inadequate knowledge of

English language, insuff cient amount of vocabulary, and a lack of English communicative
skills in real world communication; 2) a lack of ability to express critical thinking and giving

a logical reason. In addition, it was found that the students’ serious and persistent practices
under feedback given and supervised individually made the students feel conf dent and

improve their speaking performance.

ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาสากลและเป็นเครื่องมือส�าคัญที่ใช้ในการสื่อสารกับประชาคมโลกได้

อย่างไร้ขีดจ�ากัด ภาษาอังกฤษเป็นสื่อกลางในการเผยแพร่แลกเปลี่ยนข้อมูลข่าวสารและความรู้ในแขนง
ต่างๆ ดังนั้นการพัฒนาประเทศในทุกด้านให้มีความเจริญก้าวหน้าและทัดเทียมกับนานาประเทศในโลก

จึงจ�าเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่ต้องพัฒนาศักยภาพของประชากรของประเทศให้มีความรู้ความสามารถในการสื่อสาร
ด้วยภาษาอังกฤษ ประเทศไทยได้ตระหนักถึงความส�าคัญของการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษมาโดยตลอด ดังจะเห็น

ได้จากการจัดการศึกษาของชาติก�าหนดให้มีการเรียนการสอนวิชาภาษาอังกฤษในระดับต่างๆ มาเป็นเวลา
นานเพื่อให้ประชากรของชาติสามารถสื่อสารกับนานาชาติด้วยภาษาอังกฤษทั้งทางด้านการฟัง การพูด

การอ่าน และการเขียน

เป็นที่น่าสังเกตว่ามีนักเรียน นิสิต นักศึกษาตลอดจนประชาชนที่มีการศึกษายังคงแสวงหาสถาบัน
ส�าหรับสอนพิเศษภาษาอังกฤษอยู่เนืองๆ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งมีผู้เรียนจ�านวนมากที่ต้องการเรียนการพูด
