Abstract
This research aims to investigate the status and impacts of Chinese direct investment
in three fruits i.e. durian mangosteen and logan of three provinces of eastern Thailand i.e.
Rayong, Chantaburi, and Trat. Our research approach is mainly based on exploratory
research by field investigation, questionnaire survey, interview and focus group hearing. The
study finds that the number of entrepreneurs who has received the certification of Good
Manufacturing Practice (GMP) from the Office of Agricultural Research and Development
(Region 6) has increased significantly especially durian and mangosteen in Chantaburi.
Chinese entrepreneurs play a major role in exporting Thai fruits to China. Thai farmers can
sell their products at the attractive price (only for durian and mango steen) even though the
supply has increased significantly. Based on the opinion of stakeholders, Chinese
entrepreneurs play crucial role in this business and Thai government should not prohibit the
investment from them. However, the stakeholders are concerned about the future price of
durian and mangosteen due to the large expansion of planted area in neighboring countries.
In addition, these countries have set up the incentives for the Chinese investments.
Therefore, Thai government should prepare some measures for the future challenge for
example developing the business cluster with ecosystem that can promote the coopetition
between stakeholders, developing the infrastructure to enhance the productivity and fruit
exporting.
