International Seminar on Biodiversity and Sustainable Development in the Mekong River Basin 29
Research Design
1. Analyzing of physico- chemical indicators concerning water resources
2. Applying Fish base software as well as identification of fishes according to key character
of “Fishes of Laos (Maurice Kottelat)” as well as using “The Identification fish photographic guide
for Observation field survey in the Lower Mekong Basin” (Chaiwut GRUDPAN) concerning
fisheries resource
3. Assessment on the impacts of water resources and fisheries resources
4. Making public awareness for natural resource conservation with stakeholder mapping
Laboratory Procedures
1. Samples collections; preservation of target fish species in 90 % ethyl alcohol,
Identification of fishes with the key characters of P.K. Talwar and Arun G. Jhingran (1991). The
keys characters are analyzed with Fishbase software (2013) as well as the morphological analysis
by focusing on body shape and fins structure, types of scales, number of spine and soft rays of
dorsal, anal, ventral, pectoral and caudal fin. The body shape, variations of color, fin rays’ patterns
and morphological characters were mainly observed.
2. Water quality safeguard; physical - chemical analysis, D.O, B.O.D regarding water
resource
3. Making assessments on the degree of environmental deterioration and its main source of
aquatic pollution
Analysis on key factors
Mekong Basin-Wide Fisheries Management and Development Strategy 2018-2022,
mentioned in 2017 about the MRC Member Countries have acknowledged this and have prioritized
the development of a comprehensive ‘Basin-Wide Fisheries Management and Development
Strategy’ (BFMS 2018-2022) in the implementation plan of the MRC Fisheries Programme 2011-
2015. The BFMS 2018-2022 proposes ten key strategic priorities and actions. These are clustered
under (i) monitoring of key indicators of (a) fish diversity, abundance and ecology, (b) socio-
economics, livelihoods, (c) food security and nutrition, and (d) gender, to observe and document
changes and impacts in capture fisheries sector and other sectors; (ii) management-related
priorities, where the BFMS 2018-2022 promotes proactive regional engagement (conservation of
key habitats, fisheries enhancement, fisheries co-management and transboundary fisheries
management); and (iii) priorities related to development (fisheries and fish-friendly irrigation and
agriculture), aquaculture, water development and adaptation of fisheries to climate change, where
a responsive and advisory role of the BFMS 2018-2022 is envisaged. (i) Monitoring of key
indicators to document changes in capture fisheries and other sectors. In this research works, it
was carried on (i) monitoring of key indicator is (a) selected target fish species, (b) physico-
chemical indicators of water resources, (c) socio-economic development; (ii) local, regional,
national, international engagement (fisheries collaborative research work), and (iii) sustainable
natural resource development especially fisheries as well as water resources. Therefore, it is
necessary to focus on innovative research and sustainable development under the themes of
(a)Target fish species populations and its preference habitats
(b)Water resource management
(c) Socioeconomic development
(d) Local, regional, international engagement and cooperation for community development
