International Seminar on Biodiversity and Sustainable Development in the Mekong River Basin 1

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus has been
consecutively holding Nonsi Isaan national conference every year. In 2021, it was the ninth
conference which focused on the presentation of research works in various fields of science
innovation and technology, agriculture and food, health science, business administration and social
sciences and education both in Thaiand and overseas. The conference was including the oral and
poster presentations. The experts in various fields were also invited to give a lecture in this
conference. Besides, Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus has
held an international academic seminar since 2017 with the collaborations of various institutes
both in Thailand and overseas such asThasano Research and seed Multiplication, LAO P.D.R.,
Federation of Quang Tai Union of Science and Technology Association, Vietnam. Academic of
Fine Art in Warsaw, Poland., Valahia University of Targoviste, Romania, Pusan National
University, South Korea, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, South Korea.
Therefore, Kasetsart University Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus
appreciate the importance on research network and perceived problems due to global change such
as climate and unbalanced ecological system. It had impacts on organisms and livelihoods to
human in terms of economic inequality, environmental stability, earning a living, etc. The
international seminar on biodiversity and sustainable development in the Mekong river basin was
under the principle of SGDs (Sustainable Development Goal). To be guidelines for solving
problems in Mekong river basin communities, this took an opportunity to hold the international
academic seminar which contributes in various fields to express opinions and propose guidelines
for finding the solutions for sustainable development. It hoped that this project would be a driving
force for the coordination in problem solving in various fields regarding holistic city of all aspect. .
This was on the basis of natural resource, wisdom, culture, community participation, respect and
generosity for self-reliance and equal quality of life.
The topic raised in this seminar included:
1. Disaster Risk Reduction,
2. Ecosystem and Local Knowledge in Mekong river basin,
3. Climate Change Adaption
4. Mekong Wetland Sustainable Development.

Objectives
Specifically, this project was implemented:
1. To give an opportunity for academics, researchers, practitioners, scholars, students in
various fields to propose ideas and express opinions for sustainable development in
Mekong river basin;
2. To create academic and research collaboration among universities, goverment sector and
private sector both in Thailand and overseas;
3. To be an academic knowledge exchange venue at the international level.
